Bronchoscopy-Assisted Percutaneous Tracheostomy Placement and Troubleshooting

Tracheostomy is one of the common procedures performed by pulmonologists, intensivists, trauma surgeons, otorhinolaryngologists, and anesthesia specialists. This session will start with a 20-minute tutorial highlighting the indications, contraindications, and possible short-term and long-term complications related to this procedure. The final 40 minutes will be spent in case-based discussion (presented via PowerPoint) on tracheostomy troubleshooting on topics such as bleeding, accidental decannulation, and inability to ventilate.

  1. 1. Know relevant head and neck anatomy as it applies to percutaneous tracheostomy procedure.
  2. 2. Describe the step-by-step approach to percutaneous tracheostomy procedure with bronchoscopic guidance.
  3. 3. Describe potential immediate and delayed complications related to percutaneous tracheostomy.
  4. 4. Describe best practices in management of scenarios of accidental decannulation in the setting of percutaneous tracheostomy.
